The « Interoperability » Directive (2004/52/CE) aims to establish by 2011 an interoperable European electronic toll service which will facilitate movement on the whole of the Community toll road network. This new system will likewise ensure the reduction of congestion at toll stations, and therefore, the effects on the environment, as well as improving road safety.
The implementation of this directive requires the finalisation of the contractual and commercial agreements and the harmonisation of the electronic toll technologies. These two pre-requisites are currently being negotiated.
